Have you heard of Bleachers? The band. Not the kind you sit on. I had the opportunity to see Bleachers in concert a few months back and then again at Bunbury Music Festival here in Cincinnati. Thanks to a tweet by musician Ingrid Michaelson, I was introduced to the track “I Wanna Get Better” by the band, which is the brain child of Jack Antonoff, the guitarist for FUN.
You know how sometimes you hear a song on the radio or in a commercial that you fall totally in love with and then you listen to the whole album and are sorely disappointed? This was not like that. At all. I honestly can’t remember the last time that I loved an album so much. Start to finish. Beat to beat. It’s pure genius. It’s a feat in itself to create an album that is cohesive where each track feels like a solid fit, it’s another to create lyrics that are catchy but have intent and resonate with your audience. A Strange Desire does both. At times reminiscent of music from the ’80s, it’s surprisingly fresh and a departure from the cookie cutter “A+B+C= Money”- music that populates the Top 40 charts of today.
As if the album itself isn’t enough to get you hooked on the band, there’s Jack himself. He’s humble and heartfelt and geeky in a way that makes him feel relatable. He’s great with audience interaction and is one of the rare artists that seems to genuinely be in awe that people are there to see him and hear his music. You can’t help but like him and the insane music that he creates.
