Alibaba founder, and one of Asia’s richest men, Jack Ma is starring in a kung fu movie with martial arts icon Jet Li and Star Wars: Rouge One actor Donnie Yen!

The movie is titled “Gongshoudao,” which roughly translates to “The Art of Attack and Defense,” will not be feature length but will instead be a short film. Jack Ma will play the role of a kung fu practitioner, something which the billionaire will be familiar with since he has been studying and honing his skills in martial arts since 1988.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Alibaba group said, “As a passionate Tai-chi practitioner, Jack took part in the movie to promote this traditional Chinese martial art as well as the positive philosophy it embodies.”

The film is set to premier on Youko, the number one internet-based video platform in China ( Youtube is banned in the country), on November 11.  The date is significant in China since it is Single’s day, a date to celebrate your single status, think of it as the anti-Valentine holiday.

It is also a very important day for Jack Ma’s Alibaba group that specializes in e-commerce. Single’s day is the largest online shopping day in the world, frankly it makes Black Friday look like a neighborhood garage sale. 

Last year, Alibaba earned a staggering $18.2 billion on that day alone. Which probably added to Jack Ma’s already impressive net worth, Forbes estimates that Ma is worth around $39.4 billion and he currently ranks as the 19th richest man in the world.

How much will Jack Ma earn for his role?

Which begs the question, how much does a multi-billionaire get paid for a starring role in a movie? Well the answer is nothing.

Jack Ma and the other actors who participated in the film were not paid a single cent for their roles, they just did it for the love of it. Meanwhile Jet Li financed the whole project and served as executive producer.

Li said that the film served primarily as “a tribute to the predecessors in the field of Taiji, Kung Fu and Martial Arts. The timing seems to be perfect and everyone involved in this project were so enthusiastic in making it happen.”

Jack Ma is no stranger into delving into the world of entertainment from time to time. He once danced onstage to Michael Jackson and sang at a Chinese music festival. For billionaire hobbies it is actually quite endearing and entertaining,  and it surely beats running for high office with no prior political experience, like what some billionaires are doing these days.
