James Cameron, best known for his direction of Avatar and Titanic has called Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity the best space film ever made” when it opened at the Venice Film Festival.

Cuaron had a vision: an action-drama set in orbit, the majority of it with a singular character who would be weightless the entire picture. He wanted to film it using his signature long, continuous shots.

Despite fellow director, David Fincher, warning Cuaron and his cinematographer, Emmanuel ‘Chivo’ Lubezki, to wait five years for the technology to catch up with his plan, Cuaron and Lubezki went ahead stubbornly. Four and a half years later, the film was ready.

Clearly, it was worth the wait. The thriller starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as a pair of astronauts who become separated from their craft during a routine mission, has been widely praised, including by Cameron.

In an interview with Variety, Cameron said “I was stunned, absolutely floored. I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.

“What is interesting is the human dimension. Alfonso and Sandra working together to create an absolutely seamless portrayal of a woman fighting for her life in zero gravity.”

Gravity is only 91 minutes long, which is fairly short compared to recent two hour long movies, yet this does not make it any less of a film. Obviously it is quality over quantity, seeing it already has an early Oscar buzz.

The film was released on October 4th in the US and will be released on November 8th in the UK. You can check out the trailer below.
