Clearly, James Franco knows that playing a gay character in his next movie role would be too predictable. Prepare to be blindsided: he’s decided to take the role of an “ex-gay” character! The Academy Award nominee will be directed by Gus Van Sant, his 2008 director of Milk.

The New York Post‘s Page Six reports: “James Franco, currently starring in Broadway’s Of Mice and Men, is set to star in an upcoming movie about Michael Glatze, a gay activist who renounced his homosexuality after turning to religion following a health scare. The $3.5 million film is being produced by Gus Van Sant and is set to start shooting in New York in July.”

The untitled biopic tells the story of Glatze, a once esteemed figure in LGBT publications like gay magazine XY and Young Gay America, of which he founded. He eventually suffered from panic attacks, which led to his return to the closet. Michael married a woman in October 2013 as a Christian fundamentalist.

“We cannot see the truth when we’re blinded by homosexuality,” Glatze wrote in a 2007 editorial for conservative news site WND. “We believe, under the influence of homosexuality, that lust is not just acceptable, but a virtue. But there is no homosexual ‘desire’ that is apart from lust.”

Franco told The Daily Beast last year, “It’s not like it’s my mission to tell the stories of as many gay men as possible, although in some cases, I think it is the point. I guess that a lot of the figures that I love were gay.”
