Sir Paul McCartney has sponsored a sumo-wrestling team to promote his new album in Japan.
The ex Beatle has paid to have the artwork from his latest album New adorning surfaces throughout the arena at the Kyushu Grand Sumo tournament in the city of Fukuoka.
The singer-songwriter’s spokesperson confirmed to NME that the former Beatle is a big fan of sumo wrestling. When McCartney previously toured Japan he took his crew to a match and explained the rules and how scoring works.
McCartney was present at the tournament’s final match on November 24. McCartney’s PR plan was in full swing, with traditionally dressed Japanese people carrying bamboo billboards of the New artwork around the arena between rounds.
New is also up for this year’s Art Vinyl prize, which showcases the best in album artwork.
