Jason Ritter has been cast for the role of Gavin Shipman in the US remake of the popular British comedy series ‘Gavin & Stacey’, which will soon release its pilot episode with the new title ‘Friends & Family’.

Whether the US version will come anywhere close to the popularity of the BBC version is debatable, though, as the original Gavin & Stacey’s success was probably more due to the brilliant British humour and the wonderful characters with their typical Welsh and English behaviour than due to a “complicated” or “stunning” storyline worth remaking.

Even the names of the characters are said to be open to debate, which hardly seems to leave any similarities with the original show. More so, an American version of Nessa or Smithy might not be as catchy, and there is a great risk of the show becoming yet another typical story about two people from different backgrounds falling in love once the British touch to the show has been lost.

This does leave room for some good news, though, as it means that the expectations aren’t high, and perhaps something astonishing will come from Americanising one of the most typically British shows there has ever been. US remakes of British shows have been done before, and in some cases very successfully (just have a look at the nominations and awards for ‘The Office’ US).

Either way, it will definitely be interesting to see where it all leads, and with James Corden and Ruth Jones (who played Smithy and Nessa in the original series) as executive producers, we might just be in for a real surprise!
