Joanne Froggatt, well known to global audiences as sweet and caring Lady’s maid Anna in the highly successful period drama Downton Abbey, is set to star in another costumed drama.
But this time, her character is more dark and sinister, as she is going to portray Mary Ann Cotton, a true to life serial killer who lived during Victorian era England.
The two-part mini series, Dark Angel, is commissioned by ITV and will be directed by Brian Percival, also of Downton Abbey. It will be loosely based on Mary Ann Cotton: Britain’s First Female Serial Killer a book by David Wilson.
Mary Ann Cotton, who was born Mary Ann Robson in 1832, tried to raise herself above poverty. She poisoned three of her four husbands in order to collect money from their insurance policies. Her victims may have totaled at least twenty one people, which included eleven out of thirteen of her children, as well as her own mother. She is also remembered for being the subject of a chilling nursery rhyme.
Further casting for this frightening true story is set to be announced before production starts in August.
