Marvel has consistently produced incredible films, and their choice for the upcoming Dr. Strange film is impressive at best. The rumors that the extraordinarily talented Joaquin Phoenix was in talks to play the titular character in the film began to swirl a while ago, but now it seems that Phoenix is pretty much cast as Strange, with the actor being in final negotiations to lead the Marvel film.
The question is, will he take the part? There are so many factors at play here, it is difficult to determine the validity of these rumors. Usually, when a star is in “final talks” to play a role, it is a done-deal, and it can pretty much be set in stone that they will be playing the role. However, with someone like Joaquin Phoenix, who is notoriously choosy with his roles, there are a whole bunch of prerequisites and factors at play.
First of all, Phoenix has maintained his reputation as being the finest actor of his generation by sticking to prestige projects such as The Master, Inherent Vice, and Walk the Line. It is quite obvious that leading a blockbuster, even in a role as interesting as Strange, might not be something Phoenix is particularly interested in. Fair enough, the role will give him some extra exposure and introduce him to a bigger audience, but as we have seen with other leads of Marvel blockbusters, once you are in, you have a job for life. Robert Downey Jr. can owe his career resurgence to his role as Iron Man, and he will continue to play the role as long as he is able. It is unclear as to which Phoenix would want this, as he is a man who has made his career out of unique and individual film choices. However, the same could be said for Johnny Depp, who still manages to have an insanely interesting career in addition to his iconic role as Jack Sparrow.
Phoenix has always been a notable and brilliant actor, but recently he has been getting more and more high profile film work. He is leading the upcoming all-star adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s gonzo novel Inherent Vice and is set to play the lead in the currently untitled 2015 Woody Allen film. We can only hope that Phoenix gets cast as Dr. Strange as well, as he is absolutely perfect for the role.
