Coming in 2014 – an art revolution will hit the internet. PBS Digital Studios will be rolling out a brand new web series and it will be, appropriately, titled The Art Assignment.

Earlier this week, the creators of the series, Sarah Urist Green and John Green (The Fault in our Stars), sat down with Tribeca Film to discuss their exciting new project.

Why create this show? The Art Assignment will travel across America to demystify art for this tech savvy generation. The plan is to draw more people to art. The creators hope to show the viewers that art isn’t just created out of paint, stone, or colored pencils.

What is it about? Each week John and Sarah will visit artists in their workspace. At each of these stops viewers will be introduced to a different art form. Then, the artist and viewers will be given an assignment. They will be asked to make a work of art (and even destroy some of their art), film or photograph it, and then share it with the world.

Who is behind the idea? None other than Hank Green (a vlogger, musican, and entrepreneur), famous Hoosier author and vlogger, John Green, and his art curator wife, Sarah Urist Green. And yes, we finally get to see the Yeti (as Sarah is fondly called due to the fact she usually isn’t featured in John’s videos).

How was the show created? The brothers were contacted by PBS Digital Studios. After coming up with some bad ideas, they asked their friends and family what to do. Meanwhile, Sarah noticed the similarities between conceptual art and Internet memes. With the ideas and the observations, Sarah pitched to PBS and a new show was born.

When will it air? There is no set date yet. However, the plan is to start airing the show in early 2014. For more information, subscribe to their YouTube channel.

What a wild, wonderful interactive project this sounds like! It smells like a hit already! There surely will be drama (Sarah and John will be traveling together). Undoubtedly, there will be surprises (the hosts and the viewers will not know what this show is about until the new destination is reached). Finally, passion and creativity will flourish before our eyes. It sounds like the perfect combination for any program.
