Not content with playing the elusive Doctor in the upcoming 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, he has just signed up to star in Guillermo del Toro’s new TV show The Strain

The upcoming show is based around the bestselling trilogy which was co-written by del Torro; it centers around Dr Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather, who is being played by Corey Stoll (House of Cards)

Goodweather is the head of a team of people looking at the link between vampirism and a mysterious virus.

John Hurt has been cast in the role of Abraham Setrakian, who is a holocaust survivor, and teams up with Eph and the group who is battling the outbreak of the virus.

The writer and director has called Hurt “one of the greatest actors in the world,” and also added that he, “always visualised him while writing the Strain novels, and he is absolutely perfect for the part,”

Filming on The Strain is due to begin in September and will be shown on FX.
