Marvel masterminds Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige have divulged a little inside information on what fans can expect from Ultron, the robotic villain in the forthcoming Avengers sequel.

Whedon recently explained that Ultron won’t be your usual clinking and clanking emotionless metal monster. The writer/director told Empire magazine, “I’m having a blast with Ultron. He’s not a creature of logic – he’s a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.”

Much of Ultron’s unique personality will no doubt come courtesy of James Spader, the award-winning actor voicing the new baddie. Spader has taken on plenty of unusual, complex characters before, including Red, the multi-faceted antihero protagonist of NBC’s new hit The Blacklist.

In an interview with Movies.com, Marvel studios president Kevin Feige gave his take on what Spader is bringing to the role. “We love Ultron from the comics, and have always loved Ultron, and at no point do we want him to just be a robot. We want him to have an extreme personality and attitude, and James Spader is doing an unbelievable job. Again, for us it’s always about subverting expectations. Whenever you think you know what’s coming next, we surprise people or deliver it in a slightly unexpected way. And Spader is doing that with Mr. Ultron.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron is due in theaters in the U.S. May 1st, 2015.
