“Jumanji” Remake Is Officially Happening

The official word is that yes, Sony will be releasing the “Jumanji’ remake and it’s scheduled to hit theaters on Christmas Day 2016.

Earlier this week Sony Pictures released a list of 16 movies we’ll be seeing hit theaters over the next four years. Among these titles is the once rumored remake of the Robin Williams hit, Jumanji. I repeat, it’s official, the remake IS happening.

Sony has decided to roll the dice and put an updated spin on this well-known 90’s film. It has been 20 years since the fantasy/thriller story of a board game that becomes all too real graced the silver screen.

As news broke, the outcry of disgust from film fans might have resembled the movie’s popular signature drum beats which appeared when imminent doom was around the corner.

There is no denying the movie could be greatly improved with today’s movie magic and CGI abilities. The poorly green-screened animal stampedes and the clearly fake crocodile gave this classic movie charm but doesn’t come close to today’s standards. (I will, however, confess that the spider scene STILL gives me goosebumps to this day).

The hardest part to swallow is the idea of recasting Robin Williams, who was a huge part of the movie’s popularity. The studio has announced it will be a remake and not a sequel, which was also rumored. Banking on nostalgia, Sony Pictures  is hoping today’s parents will fill theaters to experience the story all over again when the movie is released Christmas Day, 2016.

Are you a Jumanji fan? What are you thoughts on yet another 90s movie makeover? I, for one, am hoping it will at least mean a better remake of the real board game to coincide with the release. That would be my bright side to this news! Who do you think will be cast? Let us know in the comments.
