Katy Perry, an artist who has a history of wearing revealing outfits, has come out asking her fellow female artists to “stop getting naked” in an interview with NPR.
Perry goes on to say that it is not a comment directed at anyone in particular but to everyone. Obviously, hearing these comments a few artists, like Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, come to mind, but they aren’t the only ones – many female artists strip down during their careers.
Perry said she isn’t judging, but just trying to say that her fellow artists should “play other cards” and not rely on their bodies. As hypocritical as it may seem, Perry is right, female artists, women in general, shouldn’t just rely on their bodies to sell music or gain attention.
Perry also said she does not want to be considered a role model, because a role model “will fail you” but she would like to start to consider herself an “inspiration.” Her comments about her fellow artists getting naked is a step towards inspirational, it sends a message that you can use your sexuality or your body, but not let it be the only thing that you use.
