On Saturday night Jamie Coots, the star of the National Geographic show Snake Salvation, died from a snake bite he received while handling a rattlesnake during his sermon.

Coots had a strong belief that snakebites would not harm believers as long as they keep their faith. While the practice of handling snakes during services has been illegal for years now, many pastors in the south continue with the practice.

When Coots was bitten, paramedics responded, arriving to the church at 8:30 PM to be told that Coots had denied any treatment.

They left at 9:10 PM and returned an hour later only to find him dead.

His son, Cody Coots, stated that his father had been bitten 8 times before with no reaction and they had expected this bite to be the same.

He said: “We’re going to go home, he’s going to lay on the couch. He’s going to hurt. He’s going to pray for a while and he’s going to get better. That’s what happened every other time, except this time was just so quick and it was crazy.”

Jamie Coots had suffered another snake bite in the past for which he also denied any treatment, instead letting his finger rot and fall off.

Professor Ralph Hood, a good friend of Jamie Coot’s, said of other devotees: “This won’t stop them: just the opposite, they will continue, and praise Jamie Coots as a martyr who died for his faith.”
