Filmmaker Kevin Smith has announced that he is working on a new Christmas-themed horror film. Yesterday on his blog (silentbobspeaks.com), he posted that he has co-written and will co-direct a holiday anthology film as an homage to Creepshow, but based on the story of Krampus.
Krampus is a beast-like creature from the folklore of Alpine countries thought to punish children who misbehaved during the Christmas season. He is an anti-Santa Claus.
Comes the Krampus! will be directed by four different members from his podcasting community. His wife, Jennifer Schwalbach, will direct a framing device to link the other three.
“I was goofing around with [Smodcast collaborator] Andy McElfresh, when we accidentally brainstormed a Christmas horror anthology that would eschew the gruesome spin on Santa Claus, and instead embrace the Scandinavian/German Kid-Eating Christmas creature known as the Krampus,” he wrote on his blog, “It was a blast to write and totally new to me, as I never actually wrote a screenplay with someone else before.”
Smith said that the script reads like a $2 million feature, and he plans to shoot Comes the Krampus! after Clerks 3.
