Lauren Lakis Unveils The Video For “Sail Away”

“This song explores my longing for having had an adult like me around, when I was a child…”

Since fist launching her career, Lauren Lakis has garnered acclaim from the likes of Earmilk, Wonderland Magazine, Substream Magazine, LADYGUNN and Culture Collide among others, and seen her fanbase grow considerably with every new release she’s shared. Her latest single, “Sail Away”, the video for which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere, is one of her strongest to date and a track she’s particularly passionate about as it’s one that reflects on several aspects of her early life and how they shaped her into the person she is today.

Asked about the themes and ideas to the song, Lauren says: “Thematically, Sail Away explores the idea of running away with my inner child, protecting and parenting her. It’s me becoming my own mother, which was something I had to do at a young age.

As the daughter of my mother, I had to learn how to take care of myself and grow up quickly. She struggled with addiction until I was almost 10 years old; I don’t have many memories of my childhood before that age. I’ve spent some years in Alanon, connecting to my inner child and learning how to “re-parent” her as a way of healing those wounds. The inner child is the part of us that is innocent, vulnerable, playful, full of wonder, freely trusting and loving. It hasn’t always been easy to connect with that side of myself.

She adds: “I didn’t feel like I had a voice as a kid, and I had no control over what was happening around me. In spite of, or perhaps because of this, I grew into an extremely strong, resilient, capable adult. This song explores my longing for having had an adult like me around, when I was a child…as well as the anger I’ve carried with me for having missed out. I’ve had to accept that no one can go back in time and fix that for me.”

As for the video, the visuals are very much a representation of the issues, thoughts and feelings addressed and expressed by Lauren in the song. In her own words, she: “..wanted to explore themes of restriction and control, and the red lace bodysuit is representative of that. It’s very contained and caterpillar/cocoon-like, desiring to transform into something free and alive, like a butterfly. It’s possible to transform from an angry, put down person into something beautiful. I intercut with footage of various insects to represent the brutality of life as it continues in a never-ending death/rebirth cycle.”
