Lena Dunham has opened up about Christopher Abbot’s sudden departure from her HBO series, Girls.

Dunham told the Los Angeles Times, “I’ve had so many concerned Twitter followers ask: What are you going to do without Charlie?” She added that if her show required guys, then “we’d be up a creek without a paddle.’”

US Weekly reports that Abbot’s decision to leave the show is rumored to be due to creative differences with the show runner, Dunham. In reality, it doesn’t matter. In the end, it was Abbot’s decision and neither he nor Dunham have had anything negative to say about one another.

For two seasons Abbot starred in Girls as Charlie, Marnie’s on-off boyfriend. Now, Dunham will have to end their relationship for good. She assured the Los Angeles Times that she has “tried to come up with an emotionally honest version of the end of that relationship.”

Dunham is sure that Girls will still work without Abbot. Allison Williams put in her two cents, and told TV Line that his departure has greatly affected the show. Williams added that while “it’s unfortunate that [Abbott] is no longer a part of the family,” she has no doubt there is still great things to come for Marnie.
