“Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high…” Do these words mean anything to you? If you were a child of the ’80s or ’90s like I was, they just might.

This is the first line from the theme song for Reading Rainbow, the children’s television series which aired on PBS. Levar Burton was the well-known host of the show, which was canceled after 21 years in 2006. Fast forward to 2014 and Burton is bringing Reading Rainbow back…at least trying to, by using a Kickstarter campaign.

Burton is working on a web-based Reading Rainbow which can be used both at home and in the classroom for free. This program will promote childhood literacy and will make the lessons from the show accessible to all.

Burton had a goal of raising a million dollars and, in order to do this, put up a number of items to give away simply for donating. And it WORKED! In less than half a day, Burton’s Kickstarter  smashed its goal thanks to the generous contributions of nearly 23,000 donors. That’s got to be some sort of Kickstarter record, right?

But don’t take our word for it (see what we did there?); head over to Burton’s Facebook page and see the progress for yourself! You can also see the video Burton created for the campaign below:
