Libby the lobster (yes, that is her name given to her by the lovely people of the internet) was captive in a supermarket tank in Florida. She was chillin’ there with her other lobster homies when Marybeth Jeitner saw her. It was an immediate friendship, prompting Marybeth to ask the internet what kind of lobster Libby was.
Libby is orange. Not red like most lobsters out there, or blue like the extremely rare ones, but orange. I’m talking a pumpkin colored kind of hue.
Marybeth wanted to find the lobster a home, as it’s such a rare sight to see. After connecting with people on Facebook, she found one of her friends in New Hampshire who then contacted the Seacoast Science Center.
Libby took the long overnight UPS trip from Florida to New Hampshire and is now in good care at the Science Center according to aquaist Rob Royer.
Royer went on to say that this color popping up in the wild is insanely rare. Like 1 in 10 million kind of rare. I think Lloyd Holliday had a better chance to get together with Mary Swanson in Dumb and Dumber than this kind of lobster happening.
Libby is estimated to be about 12 years old. For being so rare, she’s pretty much the queen of hide and seek since nobody has found her until now. If you’re in New Hampshire, go check her out!
