Mark Waters, director of Mean Girls, revealed that Lindsay Lohan was originally going to play Regina George and not the lead character, Cady.
Waters had previously worked with Lohan in 2003 on Freaky Friday, and wanted her to play Regina because, “Her energy is a very aggressive, testosterone-laden energy, and that’s exactly what I needed for Regina George. When I gave it to [Lohan], she was like, ‘I f**king love Regina George! This is the part I want to play.’”
However, they were unable to find an actress strong enough to play against Lohan’s Regina, and Paramount wanted Lohan to be in the lead role after the success of Freaky Friday.
Rachel McAdams had originally read for the part of Cady, and while Waters thought McAdams was a movie star, she also seemed too old to play the innocent ingénue. Waters recalled, “When Lindsay was acting with Rachel, she got very shy because Rachel was older and a very accomplished actress. [McAdams would] come in the room and not talk to Lindsay – she was very focused. Lindsay kind of got nervous around her, and I thought that, more than anything, was going to be the deciding factor, the fact that she affected Lindsay in that way.”
The casting decisions worked out for the best. In the last 10 years Mean Girls has become a cult classic. Waters said, “I always knew that it would have a cult following, but it wasn’t until it was in my face, seeing these kids quote it back to me, that I realized it had this profound effect on people.”
Mean Girls reminds of us all of the days before Lindsay Lohan’s struggles, when she was more like Cady and very likable. Mean Girls gave us a plethora of hilarious quotes that are still used today. And, most importantly, it taught us why we shouldn’t be mean girls, and that, “Calling somebody else fat won’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter… All you can do in life is try to solve the problem in front of you.”
