Thanks to Eiga.com and Sanspo, the cast of the live action Attack on Titan film has been revealed in costume! The costume reveal unveils a few…welcome/unwelcome surprises for the fans depending on how open you are to the live action adaption. The posters show only 6 original AOT characters whereas the other 7 showcase characters that are new to the film version of the story (these characters are NOT in the manga or anime).
According to Sanspo, the character of Shikishima (played by Hiroki Hasegawa) is a pivotal part of the film’s plot as humanity’s strongest man…does that description remind you of anyone?
It appears that Shikishima is the film substitute of fan favorite Levi (who in the manga and anime is known as “humanity’s strongest man/solider”). Although reports don’t confirm Levi being replaced, Shikishima’s character description is enough of an indication. In regards to the films casting, producer Yashihiro Sato explained that the casting was not based on how similar the actor looked to the character but to which actor brought out the characters personality/spirit.
The film has been confirmed by the director (Shinji Higuchi) to span out to two films (under the supervision of creator Isayama). The films will be based on the characters and world of the manga with the addition of several new characters that will change the dynamics of the Attack on Titan universe. The films script is being worked on by Isayama, Yuusuke Watanabe, and Tomohiro Machiyama.
I have mixed feelings about the project, mostly due to the addition of new characters. It will be a tad difficult (especially for fans who favor the manga) because the story we all love so much is being retold in a way that’s unfamiliar to us. Despite my heavy apprehension and dampened excitement, I will give this live-action a fair shot.
Both films are expected to open in theaters next summer.
