Illness kept rising star Lorde from seeing her number one single “Royals” climb the British charts.

The 16-year-old singer from New Zealand was forced to postpone her promotional tour last month after she was admitted to a hospital to receive treatment for a kidney infection.

She told British newspaper The Sun she was grateful to be feeling better. “I’ve been so poorly that I missed out on my success in the U.K. I was vomiting for days with a fever, so I’m just glad I made it over to the U.K.”

While “Royals” is currently number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, Lorde isn’t afraid to spark controversy among the fans of other young pop stars such as Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. Lorde has called Gomez an anti-feminist, and in July she told MTV News “I feel the influences that are there in the industry for people my age, like Justin Bieber or whatever, are just maybe not a very real depiction of what it’s like to be a young person.”

Lorde is in Britain promoting her new album Pure Heroine, which was released in the U.S. on September 30.
