An Air Algerie plane that went missing Thursday has now been found crashed in Mali.
The plane, which “lost contact with ground crews less than an hour after it took off” from Burkina Faso heading for Algeria, was carrying 116 people. A majority of the passengers were French, with a total of 51. French fighter jets were then dispatched to search for the plane along the route, which is nearly a straight line, with Mali being a halfway point.
The plane diverted from its original course, though, because of bad weather, then disappeared from the radar.
Meteorologist Mari Ramos claims that the weather could have been the main factor in the crash. The flight path was set to go through a turbulent area, and the diversion could have been to avoid a bumpy flight due to thunderstorms.
This flight’s crash “comes exactly a week after a Malaysia Airlines plane was brought down in Ukraine with 298 people on board.”
