M.I.A.’s new music video for “Y.A.L.A.” is as iridescent and exciting as the song itself. Throughout the video, the camera is focused tightly on M.I.A.’s face, while the screen flashes different colors. On occasion, the screen flashes very quickly — seriously, there’s a warning at the beginning of the video for anyone with epilepsy.

The video verges on looking like it was done on a Macbook, but one thing that helps the video is M.I.A.’s absolutely fabulous silver lipstick. Really, girl, where did you get that?

The song is an answer to “YOLO,” although M.I.A. gently insisted that it “wasn’t a Drake dig by the way…. It’s not like I’m obsessing over the philosophies of Drake and writing albums in the studio thinking, ‘Hmm what did Drake say?’” she joked in an interview with Complex Music. “It’s just, it’s everywhere…. And people were studying its meaning and writing dissertations on it. And I just thought that was really weird because at that time I was in India and they have a thing called Y.A.L.A. But their concept is basically the exact opposite to YOLO.” Y.A.L.A. stands for “You Always Live Again,” referencing reincarnation.
