It seems another celebrity has joined in the protest against Russia’s newest anti-gay laws. Madonna is furious over the recent beating of feminist punk rock band, Pussy Riot. The band members are notoriously vocal about LBGT rights and had been detained a day earlier for demonstrating near the Olympic Park.
Earlier today (February 20, 2014), Madonna posted on her Instagram. She wrote, “Are you kidding me? Are the police in Russia actually whipping Pussy Riot for making music on the streets? Is this the dark ages? GOD bless P. R. They are fearless! #artforfreedom #revolutionoflove.”
What exactly was the reason behind Pussy Riot being horsewhipped by police? They wanted to start an impromptu performance underneath one of the signs advertising with 2014 Winter Olympics.
That doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Apparently, the Russian police thought so; especially since the group was trying to perform their government protest song, ‘Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland’. Pussy Riot went as far as to dedicate it “…to prisoners of the swamp [slang for the coastal area around the Olympics], corrupt Olympics, ecologist Vitishko and supressed freedoms in Russia.”
