The Russian punk band Pussy Riot received quite the introduction at Amnesty International’s Bringing Human Rights Home concert in Brooklyn when Madonna took the opportunity to give a pro-gay speech.
According to the Advocate, the singer read from personal notes and talked about her experiences while touring in Russia back in 2012. She talked about how she received many death threats, and some of her fans even were arrested for “gay behavior.”
At the time, the members of Pussy Riot, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, had been sent to prison after rallying “a protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin inside a Moscow cathedral.” Pussy Riot had performed a song that criticized Putin’s regime, which oppresses human rights and is strictly against homosexuality. The group was just recently released from prison after spending two years on charges of “hooliganism.”
The concert featured Pussy Riot as the special guests of the night, and Madonna took the opportunity to thank the women for their efforts regarding gay rights. The women also gave a speech, completely in Russian. They talked about how freedom must be fought for, and how it’s “our duty to speak for those who are still behind bars.”
