Mark Wahlberg has dethroned Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to be named as the world's highest paid actor for 2017. This is according to Forbes magazine, which has just released its annual list of the world's highest earning actors.
Wahlberg was paid an estimated $68 million over Forbes' 12-month scoring period from June 1, 2016 to June 1, 2017. This is despite the fact that his latest outing, Transformers:The Last Knight was panned by critics and became the lowest grossing film in the franchise.
Last year's number one, Dwayne Johnson, is still raking in a lot of dollars and is not actually that far behind Mark Wahlberg with earnings of $65 million. He was also the main star of the Baywatch reboot, which failed miserably in the box office. However, this was balanced by the success of Fate of the Furious which was able to gross over a billion dollars in the worldwide box office.
Johnson's co-star and the main force behind the Fast and the Furious franchise, Vin Diesel, is at number three and cashes in with $54.5 million.
The accumulated earnings of all three actors at $187.5 million is larger compared to the earnings of all ten highest paid actresses in a list also released by Forbes. Led by Emma Stone with $26 million, the actresses accumulated earnings only amounted to $172.5 million.
However, despite the huge gender pay-gap, the actors list proved to be more racially and internationally diverse, with almost half the top ten being dominated by non-western actors. In contrast to the actress list, composed entirely of white women.
Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan comes in at number five with earnings of $49 million. Meanwhile, Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar is at number 10 with $35.5 million, Salman Khan is at number nine with $37 million, and Shah Rukh Khan is at number eight with $38 million.
Outside of the top ten, the list is entirely dominated by the main stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Mark Ruffalo is at number 20 with $13 million, Chris Pratt is at 19 with $17 million, Chris Evans is at 18 with $18 million, Jeremy Renner is at 17 with $19 million.
Samuel L. Jackson is at 13 with $30.5 million, and Chris Hemsworth the second highest earning Avengers star is at 11 with $31.5 million. Robert Downey Jr. is within the top ten at number six with $48 million.
Well, it does go to show that action stars and superheroes are the biggest film earners. Perhaps if women are granted more major roles in this genre, it could help lessen the pay gap?
