Sherlock won big at the Emmys on Monday (August 25), even while missing its two main actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
But where was Freeman when he was informed that he had won the Emmy for Supporting Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries?
In an interview with BBC Radio Wales, he said “I got a text from my American agent and she said, ‘You’ve just won’, and I thought, ‘Ah, very, very nice’. And then I went to sleep. I woke up to find that Ben had won and that Steven Moffat had won… and that Fargo had also done really well, you know, both shows that I was in that had been nominated did really well so I was very pleased about that.”
The actor had missed the ceremony due to an appearance in Richard III on the West End.
His co-star Benedict Cumberbatch was also absent, despite winning for Lead Actor in a Mini-series in Sherlock. Steven Moffat laughed to reporters backstage that Benedict Cumberbatch was “too big to come to the Emmys”.
“I’m delighted. Really, really pleased. Whenever you’re nominated for an award you know you’ve got a chance but I certainly wasn’t banking on it, put it that way,” Freeman added.
Sherlock ended up winning seven Emmys total, and Fargo won two.
I love seeing stories like these, and I’m thrilled about Martin Freeman winning a well-deserved Emmy, along with the rest of the Sherlock team! Keep up the great work guys!
