On The View this morning, Whoopi Goldberg made a huge announcement on behalf of Marvel Comics: a woman will officially be the next to hold the power of Thor’s hammer! The transition seems like a perfect moment to switch up typical comic characters, and broadening comic book readership. Goldberg said; “Thor, the God of thunder, he messed up. And for the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman.”
Marvel Editor Wil Moss explains in a press release, “The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription.”
The series is set to debut in October, and will be written by Jason Aaron, who reiterates how this is not a temporary shift for attention. “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
What this means for the current Thor we are still unaware, but I can’t wait to see how Marvel handles such a pivotal character transition. Are you ready for the new Thor?
