It’s a global celebration on television today! It is the day that Whovians celebrate 50 years of the Doctor and for those who love Doctor Who’s Matt Smith this is the second to last appearance he will be making as the eleventh doctor!
In an interview with USA today, Smith reflected on his role as the time lord. “It’s really transformed my life for the better,” Smith said. “It’s one of those jobs you’re always going to miss forever, because it’s such a wonderful journey, but it felt like it was the right time for me to go.” He’s been the Doctor since 2010 and many have followed his journey through time with his different companions.
Smith even goes on to compare the role to the iconic James Bond. The Doctor is definitely the James Bond of science fiction! “It’s like playing James Bond — people have their favorite James Bond, and people have their favorite Doctor. Some people go for yours, and some people don’t,” he explains.
Mr. Smith will definitely go down in DW history, but he has a lot in store for his fans. The actor will star in the film How to Catch A Monster next year and the musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho in North London.
Now as Whovians watch “The Day of the Doctor”, they’ll see Smith alongside the tenth doctor David Tennant and in the special Christmas episode, Smith will exit Doctor Who, handing off the role to Peter Capaldi.
