Doctor Who star Matt Smith is swapping his sonic screwdriver for a chainsaw, in the musical adaptation of American Psycho.

Filming his final scenes as the 11th Doctor over the weekend, Smith began rehearsals today for his role as Patrick Bateman, the 1980s Wall Street investment banker with a penchant for sick and twisted fantasies involving rape, mutilation, torture and cannibalism.

The production is being described as a “satirical comedy on the materialism and greed that marked the 80’s”. If it gains critical acclaim it will transfer to the West End and eventually to Broadway.

Fellow cast members were kept in the dark as to who would be portraying the sadistic monster that is Patrick Bateman and only learned of Smith’s inclusion when they arrived at rehearsal earlier today.

Previously appearing on stage in The History Boys, That Face and Swimming With Sharks, American Psycho will be Smith’s debut in a staged musical.

Joining him on stage in the ensemble cast is a who’s who of UK talent that includes, Ben Aldridge, Charlie Anson, Jonathan Bailey, Katie Brayben, Cassandra Compton, Holly Dale Spencer, Susannah Fielding, Simon Gregor, Holly James, Lucie Jones, Tom Kay, Gillian Kirkpatrick, Eugene McCoy and Hugh Skinner.

The production will be directed by Artistic Director Rupert Goold, and is based on Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s (Glee) adaptation of the novel by Brett Easton Ellis, with music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik (Glee)

American Psycho will preview from December 3 and will officially open on December 12.
