This year fandom blogs, news websites, and entertainment reporters have all been buzzing about the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. The anniversary is so anticipated, that a weekend-long event will be held in its honor. You know it’s serious, because Matt Smith will be a guest.
“The event this year will be an extra special occasion for me,” Smith told DigitalSpy.
It’s an emotional time for us…I mean Whovians…I mean it’s emotional for Smith who is leaving the show.
“The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebration Weekend,” is an event that will be held at London’s ExCeL. It will take place from Friday, November 22 to Sunday, November 24, and will include guest appearances by Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy.
Baker will attend the event for one night only, Saturday, November 23. More high-profile guests will be announced in upcoming weeks.
The celebration will be a conglomeration of events, including a two theatre panel shows which will feature star guests from all of Doctor Who’s 50 years, as well as a special effects show which will be hosted by an expert at practical effects, Danny Hargreaves.
Other activities that will happen over the course of the weekend long celebration will include audio and visual effect workshops, stunt workshops, walk-like-a-monster workshops with Doctor Who‘s official monster choreographer Ailsa Burke, and on-stage panels with cast members.
“I’m truly looking forward to a huge celebration with the fans in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary episode,” said Smith.
