According to an announcement from The Hollywood Reporter, Michelle MacLaren has been signed on by Warner Bros. as the director of the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. MacLaren will reportedly work with writers to develop the yet-unnamed project which is scheduled to be released on June 23, 2017. Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and Charles Roven are said to be the producers behind the project. Gal Gadot, cast to play Wonder Woman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, will continue her role for this installment of the series.

Rumors that MacLaren was in the running have circled for quite some time, and MacLaren was definitely among the favorites. Although the studio may have felt the pressure to choose a woman to direct a major movie about the Amazonian princess, studio executives seemed to have doubts about the potential success of a movie directed by a woman.

MacLaren’s success thus far has been related to television shows, including Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones. Prior to the selection of MacLaren, Joss Whedon had an on-again/off-again relationship with the project up until 2007. Directors Jennifer Kent (The Badabook) and Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland) were among the recent round of candidates.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to open in theaters on March 25, 2016.
