‘Modern Family’ Recap: ‘Do Not Push’ The Family

Taking a portrait isn’t as simple as it should be on this week’s ‘Modern Family’. And neither is explaining a new college boy to your nosy family.

Last night’s episode of Modern Family began at the Tucker-Pritchett household, with the seemingly simple task of taking a family portrait to replace the Lily-less photograph above the mantelpiece. After a few attempts, Mitchell and Cam realized that Lily had hit that dreaded stage in childhood where a smile is more of a toothy grimace. With a sharp push from Claire, Mitch and Cam realize they have to accept Lily, creepy laughs-and-all.

The whole Dunphy family were accompanying Alex on a trip around a prospective College, Caltech, which is only a short drive from their home; every students’ dream! As it turns out, Alex only agreed to the tour to please her family and did not want to attend… until she met a boy of course! Phil, Haley and Luke had a great, family-bonding realization in the name of science, but then subsequently came to see that it was not really science at all.

Jay tried to get Gloria a thought out gift for their anniversary, and believes, after a clichéd Manny pep talk, that he got it right with a home-made pottery rabbit that Gloria smashed after misunderstanding Jay, trying to find a hidden present. Like with the rest of the families, they both sort it out, keeping both a sentimental gift (Gloria then made a bookmark full of memories) and an expensive gift.

Personally I thought the story lines were a bit repetitive, but I did not dislike it and there were good laughs. Let me know what you thought in the comments below!
