It appears that the British Labour party is set to have itself a new hero to rally behind. Comedian Eddie Izzard has confirmed plans that he will put himself forward as the Labor candidate for the London mayoral race, reports Digital Spy.
Before you get too excited at the possibility of Izzard knocking off current mayor Boris Johnson, Izzard does not intend to run until the 2020 election.
This week, the Labour Party faithful met in Brighton for their annual conference. During the Labour List rally, Izzard made his intentions known and was greeted with a resounding cheer of support from those in attendance.
The task of trying to topple Johnson in 2016 looks like it will fall to Labour MP Tessa Jowell. However, she has only positive things to say about the man who might contest her candidacy in 2020: “Eddie is a man of enormous substance, generosity and conviction. His decision to do this is a vote of confidence in Labor.”
Izzard’s announcement was not wholly surprising, as back in March of this year, he declared his intentions to move into politics. Speaking to The Sun, he said: “I’m going to chuck in comedy in six years to go into politics. I’ve proved I can be determined and do things in a different way. And you need comedy in politics.”
