Moviegoers Fight Rooney Mara’s Tiger Lily Casting With Petition

NULL

No matter where you look these days, films will always have some sort of production drama. This week, everyone is irked about the upcoming live-action remake of Peter Pan. In an earlier announcement, Rooney Mara was cast as Tiger Lily, to a slew of heated responses. In the story, Tiger Lily is the Native American princess who helps Peter Pan in his eternal battle against the nefarious Captain Hook. Mara is in an odd choice, as she is Caucasian, and meant to play a Native American. Moviegoers have started a petition to fight against the racial discrimination and selection in Hollywood.

The petition has gathered over 7,000 signatures, with more still coming. It asks Hollywood to be more diverse in their casting selections, objecting to the casting of white people in colored roles.

However, the wording in the petition isn’t entirely accurate, so readers beware! The authors of the petition claim that “a statement by the studio was unapologetic” towards the uproar and that a “black actress and a French actress were first considered for the role.” The fact of the matter is, Warner Bros. has yet to release a statement regarding Mara’s casting, so we’re unsure where this statement originated from.

We’ll stay tuned to this story, so stick with PopWrapped for all your Peter Pan and Rooney Mara news!
