The Mummy Trailer Reveals Russell Crowe’s Mr. Hyde

The Mummy reveals the next step in the Universal Monsters reboot, Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde, played by Russell Crowe.

Are you ready for the Universal Monsters reboot? We already announced the writer for the new The Creature From the Black Lagoon remake, and now we’ve seen the first seeds for Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde sown in the latest trailer for The Mummy.

Played by Russell Crowe, the glimpse we get of Hyde himself is a very small one, with Jekyll being the larger focus. Presumably, they want to reveal to remain mostly a surprise. The goal, according to The Mummy writer and director Alex Kurtzman, is to have all these creatures seamlessly fit together into the larger world Universal is creating.

“We wanted to understand the context of The Mummy in the larger world. And we wanted to know that monsters existed for millennia,” he said, “And we knew that as the story evolved there was going to be an organization that was maybe cataloging them, following them, collecting them. That would determine the good ones from the bad ones. That was sort of the keeper of that secret history.”

Jekyll in this universe is part of Prodigium, a group that will act as the connection between all the monsters. As a reminder, this world not only features the mummy and Jekyll, but also Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man. On building the new Universal Monsters universe, Kurtzman had this to say.

“The only way to build a universe is to not think in terms of building a universe. You have to make great individual movies, first and foremost, and if you do that, then the audience will follow you. So that has been the goal in making The Mummy. It’s not so much ‘build a universe’, it’s ‘make a great Mummy movie.’ Now, if in the context of making a great Mummy movie you can plant the seeds for something else? Fantastic. But the only way you can get there is if those seeds can be planted organically and if it can be part of The Mummy story.”

The Mummy will hit theatres on June 9th and will star Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella.
