YouTube has long been a place for singers, songwriters, musicians, and bands to post their original works, covers and collaborations for the public to enjoy. So it’s only natural for music to be a big part of VidCon every year. This year, there were 4-6 concerts/showcases daily, on two different stages. The Kia MainStage hosted three showcases daily that included everyone’s favourite YouTube stars. On the first day of VidCon, one of everyone’s favourite Australian YouTubers, Troye Sivan, even made the exciting announcement that he’s releasing his debut EP later this summer!

One of my favourite performances from the MainStage was when Meghan Tonjes brought her friend and fellow YouTuber, Mike Falzone, up on stage to perform an amazing duet.

Also during the Friday MainStage concert, Hank Green took the stage with his band ‘The Perfect Strangers,” who provided a vibrant set complete with crazy dance moves.

During the day, the Awesomeness TV stage was the place to go for entertainment. This stage hosted up-and-coming YouTubers as well as an Open Mic set.

For musicians and creators, there was a special panel, featuring David Choi, Meghan Tonjes, Tyler Ward, Mike Falzone, Alejandro Manzano, and Margaret Gregory from YouTube Music. During the panel, the musicians discussed balancing posting covers and original material, dealing with copyright, the experience of touring, and making a career off YouTube.

Two of the most exciting developments for musicians in particular is the ‘Tip Jar’ feature and the YouTube Cards, which allow creators to link directly to their crowd funding campaigns. This is much more appealing than the tradition annotations. As a fan of a particular YouTuber, viewers are very willing to help them out however they can and the Tip Jar will allow fans to contribute directly to the creator, right from the page where you’re watching their videos.

All this is very exciting news for musicians on YouTube, trying to do what they love for those who are supporting them!
