As you can see, the lineup looks very familiar, as only three new shows (Timeless, This is Us and The Good Place) will debut in the fall. The majority of NBC’s picked up shows are being kept until midseason.
Today at NBC’s press call prior to tomorrow’s Upfronts presentation, the network chair, Bob Greenblatt, said, “We only needed to add three shows and move four around. We’re dancing a jig. […] For the first time in a long time (NBC is) not running around throwing shows against the wall and hoping for the best.” He then added, “Some of our biggest new shows have come in midseason. We just didn’t need to overturn the schedule and move 15 time periods around. We’re feeling confident about the stability. […] Just because we have the Olympics doesn’t mean we should abandon a schedule that’s working and add more shows. Midseason is going to be the time to make some changes and add more shows, but I’m happy that we don’t have to do a lot in the fall. I couldn’t be happier.”
Two of NBC’s new shows, Timeless and This is Us, are getting top placement on the schedule, behind The Voice. Blindspot, which used to have The Voice as lead-in, may now struggle on Wednesdays, as it takes on newly-cancelled The Mysteries of Laura’s spot.
On Thursdays, NBC is staging a short one-hour comedy block, with Superstore and the new Kristen Bell and Ted Danson show, The Good Place, starting the night off. Chicago Med, which aired on Tuesdays after The Voice, will follow at 9p.m. The Blacklist, now bumped to 10p.m., will end the network’s onetime Must-See-TV night.
