Neon Trees frontman Tyler Glenn has come out as gay. The singer began sharing the news with friends and family last year, but made the announcement public today as part of an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
Once the news began hitting the media, Glenn posted a tweet stating, “Yes. I am a happy and healthy Mormon gay pop star. I don’t know what it all means, but I’m ok with it.”
The lifelong Mormon and Utah native spoke more about his religion and the divided stance its members take regarding homosexuality.
“We were always taught, and I hate this word, ‘tolerance.’ The only time that felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up.” In 2008, the Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent $22 million in campaigns against same-sex marriage legislation in California.
The 30-year-old performer also added that his decision was inspired by other public figures who have recently come out, particularly athletes.
“I really love all of the sports figures that are coming out,” Glenn told the magazine. “I appreciated Michael Sam was like, ‘I want to be able to go to the movies and hold hands with my boyfriend.’ Even hearing him say ‘boyfriend,’ I was just like, that’s cool.”
Glenn, who has enjoyed mainstream success with Neon Trees ever since their break-out single “Animal” was released in 2010, also revealed he had known he was gay since he was a child and many of the songs on the band’s new album Pop Psychology were inspired by his years in the closet.
We here at PopWrapped wish Tyler lots of love!
