Some say “girls cause the most drama” but that has a whole different meaning in this story!
The hot American sitcom New Girl is facing a lawsuit after writers of the show were accused of plagiarism.
Stephanie Counts and Shari Gold, who are screenwriters, filed a lawsuit against the show claiming that the show’s creator, Elizabeth Meriweather, executive-producers Peter Chernin and Jacob Kasdan. Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc and William Morris Endeavor Entertainment LLC for plagiarism.
Counts and Gold claim that New Girl is a complete ripoff of their own original scripts and that they are the true creators of the Fox series we all know and love.
The Hollywood Reporter, who have a copy of their suit say that it demands monetary compensation, credit for the show and an injunction to halt any further filming of New Girl and distribution of the show.
Counts and Gold retained a lawyer once the show first became popular back in 2011 and Fox apparently offered a $10,000 settlement offer which was refused.
The original show was to be named Square One and is based off Counts’ real-life experiences. It is also said on the suit that the minor differences between the two scripts are “so small and insignificant that they cannot be afforded copyright protection, and are, in fact, nothing more than transparent attempt to hide the Defendants’ blatant plagiarism.”
Along with this, the suit documents list and compare the many similarities between the two shows. They are “both protagonists are awkward, quirky women around the age of thirty”, “the name of the protagonist’s unfaithful beau in each work is Spencer”, “the plot of both works revolves around the protagonist moving in with three guys,” “the three new guy roommates in each work have identical personality traits” and “the best friend in each work is named “CeCe” or has the initials ‘C.C.’.”
Along with credit for the show and a public apology, Counts and Gold are seeking “compensatory, statutory, punitive and exemplary damages.”
