The new cover for EA Sport’s NHL ’14 was revealed this weekend and the all star New Jersey Devils goaltender, Martin Brodeur, is the lucky player to land the feature.

If you are a fan of the NHL you know that throughout the season there has been an ongoing competition to choose who would be on the cover this year, and ol’ Marty beat out Sergei Bobrovsky (Columbus Blue Jackets) with 22 million votes in the final round.

Brodeur is the first goalie to land the cover in 16 years; John Vanbiesbrouck was featured in 1997.

For you non-hockey fans out there, let me give you some insight on this 41-year-old veteran:

In a matter of 16 seasons, Brodeur has these accolades to his name (and more):

·       Most regular season wins

·       Most regular season shutouts (no goals allowed)

·       Most playoff shutouts

·       Most overtime wins

·       Only goalie to reach 600 wins in his career

·       Three Stanley Cup rings

·       Four Vezina trophies (the trophy awarded to the best goaltender for the season)

·       And not one, but TWO Olympic gold medals with Team Canada (2002 and 2010)

This is just a small sample of achievements this highly respected goaltender has made; I think it’s quite fitting that he is finally rewarded with the cover of an EA Sports NHL game.

In a statement given by Brodeur he said, “The support I’ve received throughout the cover vote campaign has been incredible. My kids pushed me to participate in the campaign, and they are really excited to see their dad on the cover of the game they play all the time.”

Last year, Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers nabbed the front cover. Other recent players that have graced the front cover include Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews from the Stanley Cup winning Chicago Blackhawks, and Steven Stamkos from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The game will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on September 10th in North America and on September 13th worldwide.

Only time will tell who will grace the cover next season, but I can only hope the player will come from my favourite team – the Toronto Maple Leafs.
