“They’re creepy and they’re kooky. Mysterious and spooky…” But, they aren’t the Addams family. No way – not at all. These are just ordinary people being harassed by fiendish beings of the supernatural kind. In the new Paranormal Activity (given the apropos title The Marked Ones) we follow some poor, unfortunate souls as they battle netherworld spirits.

This new installment to the mega-hit movie franchise takes on the daunting task of adopting “a plot that was hinted at in the previous edition of the series, centering on a Catholic inquiry into a reported demonic possession.” Sounds frightening, but very intriguing!

According to the promo, we will be traveling rough a rough Latino neighborhood. That fact makes sense because “series creator Oren Peli was planning to fashion a Latino version that would serve as a “cousin” of the series rather than a standard sequel or spin-off.”

At first, nothing seems out of the ordinary, but it’s just the calm before the storm. Then, a woman gets killed and a bunch of 20-somethings decide to explore her apartment. The dude who suggests it was practically her neighbor; he lived in the flat above her place.

Big mistake guys and gals. They discover blood all over the place, dark magic talismans, and a ton of video cassettes. It’s all kinda freaky.

The freakiness intensifies when weird things happen to the amateur investigators. You name it, it happens. Kids have weird dreams, then they wake up with bite marks. A guy gets beat up, bullies are thrown off of the victim. At one point a guy pulls a red thing out of his eye (ew, just, ew). There are even eyeless kids and a montage of an exorcism and demon violence.

The whole promo is convoluted. It doesn’t seem to be a very scary horror film. Instead, it comes off as a little confusing. Hopefully, when it hits theaters in January 2014, the whole movie will make much more sense and that it brings the thrills and chills of the previous installments.
