On January 31, upstate New York Resident Benjamin Smith was arrested when he was found sitting in his with a loaded rifle, machete, and a container of gasoline. The record states that he was charged with threatening to kill former president George W. Bush.

Smith, 44, expressed romantic interest in Bush’s eldest daughter, Barbara Pierce Bush. He thought that by making an attempt on her father’s life that he would be able to win over her affections, but U.S. Secret Service was able to arrest him long before that would have been a possibility.

“Bush will get his,” Smith screamed as he was taken into custody, according to the criminal complaint filed in federal court. Later, when asked about his marital status, he told agents he was divorced and “working on a relationship with Barbara Bush.”

Smith’s intents were discovered when his mother, whom he shares a residence with, found a threatening letter in their home and found a rifle missing. His mother called the police to report the letter which stated, “I’m going to work for George W. Bush and the Pentagon. I have to slay a dragon and then Barbara Bush is mine.”

The official charges against Smith are still unclear. According to Federal Law, it is illegal to threaten a current or former president; however, Smith’s lawyer, Peggy Cross-Goldenberg, has expressed that the note Smith had written did not constitute a “true threat.” Later, the judge added that it was “unclear” a jury would find Smith guilty.
