After much anticipation, George Lucas has announced that the opening of his museum of art and movie memorabilia will be hosted in Chicago. Los Angeles and San Francisco had also vied for the honor, but were turned down. Mayor Rahm Emanuel lobbied hard for the museum, working long and hard to establish Chicago as a global destination, and is thrilled at the addition to his city.
Many are surprised by the decision, given Lucas’s firm ties to the state of California. The Lucasfilm visual effects division is in San Francisco, and the headquarters for Lucasfilm and Skywalker Sound are across the bridge in Marin County. Nevertheless, Lucas has sentimental ties to Chicago as his wife, Mellody Hobson, a prominent businesswoman, originally hails from the Windy City. The city even closed down Promontory Point so the couple could celebrate their wedding.
Chicago also offered the best location: right on the lakefront near Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum of Natural History. San Francisco lost their leg up when it denied Lucas’s original desired location near Golden Gate Bridge.
Lucas hopes to open the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in 2018.
