What’s that sound? Barbz and Swifties everywhere are having a social media showdown. Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift have exchanged words in a disagreement over Twitter, and the internet world is having a field day.
@NICKIMINAJ I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..

Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn’t say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13 — NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Just this morning, MTV teamed up with the Apple Music radio show, Beats 1, to reveal the 2015 VMA Nominations. Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift all lead the pack with various nominations. However, Nicki Minaj was not pleased with the results. While Nicki was nominated for a handful of categories such as Best Female Video, Best Collaboration, Best Hip Hop Video, and more, her video for “Anaconda” was snubbed for Video of the Year. Nicki took her frustrations to Twitter immediately, and called out MTV.
U couldn’t go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween…an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?

Nicki goes to further explain the cultural impact “Anaconda” had on the media, including Ellen’s Parody and the Cover Art for “Anaconda” being escapable. Her fans rallied support for Nicki immediately and she showed her appreciation in the form of retweets.

Nicki’s tweets don’t stop there. She expresses that if she was a different “kind” of artist, her video wouldn’t have been snubbed. While subtle, it is clear that Nicki is speaking out as a Black female artist, who also embraces curvier figures in her videos.
And if the day couldn’t get anymore exciting, Taylor Swift stepped in with her opinion and misunderstanding with Nicki’s stance. Saying that, “it’s unlike you to pit women against each other,” Taylor was clearly in disagreement with Nicki’s statements. As seen in their tweets above, Nicki didn’t believe the conversation had anything to do with her.
When Taylor shot back once again, the media storm broke loose.
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You’re invited to any stage I’m ever on. — Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
Whether shady or genuine, Taylor’s remarks are under fire, as pointed out in the tweet below.
.@taylorswift13 stop using “support all girls” as an excuse to not be critical of racist media that benefits and glorifies you

Nicki and Taylor have both been spokeswomen for themselves, as the media has constantly criticized them in the past. Do not mistake this for what it is not: a feud between two pop stars. But, however, a conversation on race, sexism, feminism, and the media, that must be continued.
The mild melee between the two has seemed to cool off, but the world isn’t going to stop talking about this one for a while. Nicki and Taylor have been notably supportive of the other in the past. Let’s just hope this one doesn’t lead to any “Bad Blood” between them.
