Just a few days after issuing an official statement turning down the #Miiquality campaign against Tomodachi Life’s exclusion of gay marriage, Nintendo has apologized for the lack of same-sex options in the title.

Furthermore, they’re vowing that, if Tomodachi Life becomes a franchise, they will be incorporating more options to make LGBT-oriented and all other gamers feel more comfortable with the coming installments. The company released a formal apology and explanation on May 9.

“We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game’s design, and such a significant development change can’t be accomplished with a post-ship patch. At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy. We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.”

What do you think about this change of heart?

Considering the current policy set against gay marriage in Japan, Nintendo’s openness towards future change is especially welcome.  I’ll be thinking hard about purchasing a copy of Tomodachi Life when it is released in North America on June 6 this year in support of a more inclusive future for the series. What about you?
