Olivia Grasso Addresses The Facade Of Social Media With “Late Night TV”

“This song is about addressing the reality of attacking people behind a screen just to smile to their face and pretend like we don’t have any issues.”

Feeling burnt out on social media? Is Instagram giving you existential dread? We feel you, and so does Music City-based pop artist Olivia Grasso. The singer-songwriter’s newest track, “Late Night TV,” which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere, is all about confronting the façade of social media and it’s just the anthem you need to cure your Facebook story blues.

Citing her personal music inspirations as Lorde, Jack Antonoff, Daft Punk and Kanye West, it’s easy to see how Grasso represents the musical melting pot that is Nashville, Tennessee. Drawing inspiration from multiple genres, her material features hints of pop, hip-hop, gospel, and rock, cultivating a sound that has a little something for everyone to enjoy.

The 22-year-old artist only started her musical journey early last year and had to completely readjust her trajectory when the world went into quarantine. “Late Night TV” is Olivia’s third single and the only time she ever interacted with another human to create it was when she cut the vocals for the song; all of the writing, producing, recording etc, took place via Zoom and email.

While Grasso may just be getting her start, she’s already coming through with the hard-hitting questions on her newest track. “I wrote this thinking about how two-faced culture creates us to be,” she explains. “Social media, the news, reality tv, etc want to use our lives to sell something, influence something, or manipulate something. It’s not real. What’s on the screen is a false reality that is enticing and attractive, but will never satisfy and never fulfill. We willingly buy into it out of our own insecurities and identity issues just to be left feeling void.”

She goes on to add: “This song is about addressing the reality of attacking people behind a screen just to smile to their face and pretend like we don’t have any issues. The ‘late night tv’ line came from me wondering: are these people really friends or is it really just all a show?”
