Is Oprah heading to Broadway?
Well, according to The New York Times, YES!
Oprah Winfrey has been in talks with the lead producer of the Pulitzer Prize winning play, Night, Mother, Scott Sanders.
The play is about a mother who is struggling to keep her daughter from killing herself.
If Oprah gets the lead role she would be acting alongside Tony Award winner Audra McDonald.
According to two theater executives, Oprah and Audra read the play together last year with the plays director, George C. Wolfe; they were all very happy with the results.
Oprah and Sanders are currently working together on a revival of the Broadway musical, The Color Purple.
In a recent interview Sanders said he was in talks with Oprah but didn’t confirm whether or not it would be for the play Night, Mother.
Saying “Oprah has had a longstanding desire to act on Broadway, She understands how unique and challenging performing live on stage will be as an actress. She and I have been looking at a number of plays and roles in order to find material and a character that truly resonate with her. We’ve recently read something that we’re both excited about but are not yet ready to officially announce the specifics.”
Oprah’s reps haven’t responded and Audra’s reps have declined to comment.
