Almost everyone I know has been binge watching Orange is the New Black on Netflix this week, but the television show is doing much more than entertaining the masses.

You see, the show has filmed at a number of real prisons, including the Suffolk County Jail on Long Island. During said filming, things such as dirty water coming from the faucet and an infestation of rats were noted.

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) has also noticed the similarities, and they are using the popular show to highlight these conditions alongside their Twitter campaign, #HumanityIsTheNewBlack.

This is not the first time the NYCLU has received complaints from inmates. In 2012, 100 inmates came forward, concerned about conditions at two local jails, including the county jail. While a lawsuit was filed, it has not yet been addressed.

What is the county doing? Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone made a statement that he will get in contact with the sheriff’s office, the office that oversees conditions. However, a spokesperson from the office has stated that the standards set forth by New York State have always been met in all county correctional facilities.
